The region's economy (agriculture, in particular) depends on water that is becoming less accessible. There are ways to avert a water crisis, but we must join forces and act. Today. The region needs to optimize the use of available water resources at the regional level. It is extremely important to strengthen the coordination in the field of transboundary river management. From a technical point of view, significant water saving can be achieved through the introduction of modern water conservation technologies and the modernization of irrigation canals.

Regional governments, international organizations and multilateral development banks are faced with the task of building the Eurasian Transport Framework that should help the sustainable socio-economic development of Central Asia.

Conrad Albrecht, Managing Director and Head for Directorate of Sustainability at the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) participated in the recent MFI Working Group for Environmental and Social Standards. Stanislav Chuyev, Senior Analyst at the Center for Industry Analysis of the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) Directorate for Analytical Research, spoke at the Conference on Food Security and Sustainable Agricultural Development organized on the eve of this year's Meeting of the BRICS Ministers of Agriculture. During the Eurasian Development Bank’s (EDB) Annual Meeting and Business Forum, Conrad Albrecht, Managing Director and Head of the EDB Directorate of Sustainability, delivered a presentation on the implementation of environmental and social standards in project assessments in Central Asia. He emphasised that rapid urbanisation and climate change require a new approach to infrastructure development in the region and shared the Bank’s experience in assessing projects from a sustainability perspective.

Almaty – Today, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan, the UN Development Programme in Kazakhstan and the Eurasian Development Bank signed the letter of intent. The purpose of this cooperation is to implement joint development projects in multi-purpose water resources management.
“Our Ministry faces many important tasks, one of which is the modernization and improvement of the country’s water management system. For this purpose, a concept and its comprehensive plan outlining specific measures for the development of water infrastructure in Kazakhstan and other large-scale projects were developed and approved. We intend to actively cooperate with international organisations and financial institutions, adopt the best practices of other countries, and jointly implement large projects that will bring benefits for decades to come. Today’s agreement is another step in this direction,” noted Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation.
